Meghan and Harry’s Portugal Property Plans May Face EU Citizenship Hurdles

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s reported interest in a property at Portugal’s CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club could face some legal and logistical challenges, according to experts. While the $4.7 million development offers luxurious ocean-view residences across 722 acres, specific residency requirements may complicate their plans.

A recent report by the New York Post reveals that the Sussexes would need EU citizenship to reside there long-term. This citizenship would grant them access to the Schengen area, allowing free movement across various European countries. Since the UK’s exit from the EU, however, Meghan and Harry, like all British citizens, would need to meet Portugal’s requirements for residency.

The process to obtain Portuguese citizenship involves filing an application and passing a language test, which is designed to evaluate basic language skills in Portuguese, including everyday expressions and commonly used phrases. For those seeking quicker residency, Portugal’s “Golden Visa” program is an option, but it involves specific investment criteria.

To qualify for the Golden Visa, applicants can invest over $540,000 in local businesses, scientific research, investment funds, or other qualifying areas. For Meghan and Harry, pursuing one of these pathways could provide a more streamlined option for residency without the need for citizenship testing.

As the Sussexes explore their future plans, residency options, and legal requirements will be key in determining whether they can call Portugal home.
