Why Kate Middleton May Not Wear a Tiara to King Charles’ Coronation

It’s with the most extravagant royal jewels, diamonds, and accessories you’ve ever seen from the royal vaults that Kate Middleton understands just how to dress up an outfit. Now, however, rumors are circulating that the Princess of Wales may opt not to wear a tiara at all at her father-in-law King Charles III’s coronation on May 6.

The debate is still continuing, but it has already been established that ladies in the royal family are obliged to wear sparkly headpieces, per People. The Court Jeweller author Laura Kiehna discussed the unexpected news with the journal.

Almost all of the royal ladies and many aristocratic women wore tiaras during the Queen’s coronation in 1953, she said. Yet in the last 70 years, things have undoubtedly altered.

I’m sure expecting to see coronation tiaras, but it’s likely that Charles is establishing a midday formal dress code for the occasion, similar to some of his European predecessors, such as the king of the Netherlands. According to Jessica Storoschuk, a royal historian, the choice is not particularly surprising, as reported by Page Six Style.

Considering that Charles wants to have a contemporary coronation, she added, it seems reasonable that he would choose a formal day dress code that excludes tiaras. The removal of tiaras by other family members is “quite likely,” according to Storoschuk.

Although Queen Camilla is anticipated to don a modified replica of Queen Mary’s crown sans the Koh-i-Noor diamond, King Charles will be crowned with the ancient St. Edward’s Crown. The crown was worn by Queen Mary at King George V’s coronation in 1911.

The option made by Queen Camilla is remarkable since it’s been a while since a coronation included the use of an existing crown. King George VI is anticipated to leave Westminster Abbey wearing the Imperial State Crown, exactly as Queen Elizabeth II wore at her coronation in 1953 if he chooses to follow in his mother’s footsteps.

Middleton has shown a special fondness for Princess Diana’s Lover’s Knot Tiara and the Lotus Flower Tiara after wearing Queen Elizabeth’s Cartier Halo Tiara to her 2011 nuptials to Prince William. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that Kate Middleton has a change of heart.
