Prince Harry and Meghan Reportedly Eyeing Portugal as ‘Bolt Hole’ If They Leave the U.S.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly exploring alternate options for their future, including a potential retreat to Portugal, amid concerns about their standing in the U.S. should Donald Trump’s presidency pose challenges for them.
Royal expert Jennie Bond revealed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have already secured a property in Portugal, potentially arranged with the help of Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank.
“They do now have a bolt hole in Portugal. It’s probably much more than a bolt hole – it’s undoubtedly a very beautiful property and was maybe sourced by Eugenie’s husband, Jack,” Bond explained. “So, if things get tricky or uncomfortable in the States, Europe may see a little more of Harry and Meghan and their children.”
Despite this contingency, Bond suggested the couple is in no rush to relocate. “My guess, though, is that they will let the dust settle and see how things pan out – they seem very happy in their Californian lifestyle, and I’m sure they don’t want to unsettle their children unnecessarily.”
The speculation comes after Donald Trump publicly stated he would not extend protection to Prince Harry should he need it during Trump’s presidency. Speaking to the Mirror, Trump said, “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.”
The Sussexes currently reside in Montecito, California, with their two children, Archie and Lilibet. Their life in the U.S. has been characterized by high-profile projects, including their Netflix series and Harry’s memoir Spare, as well as ongoing tensions with the British Royal Family.
While they reportedly enjoy their Californian lifestyle, the potential move to Europe indicates they may be considering long-term alternatives should circumstances in the U.S. change. With Trump’s stance adding to the uncertainty, the option of a European base could provide a safety net for the couple.
For now, Harry and Meghan appear to be focusing on their current ventures, while keeping an eye on their future. Whether or not they will eventually relocate remains uncertain, but the possibility of Portugal offers a glimpse into their contingency planning.
