“Of course this traitor and fraud would” Internet slams Former President Trump’s Vows to Release January 6 Rioters if Re-elected
Former President Donald Trump, in one of his first promises as a potential future president, has declared that if he secures victory in November, he will prioritize the release of individuals imprisoned for their involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Trump made this announcement on his Truth Social platform, outlining his agenda, which includes closing the border and advancing drilling initiatives.
This announcement marks a significant shift in Trump’s stance on the issue. While he has previously expressed sympathy for those convicted in connection with the insurrection, this is the first time he has explicitly pledged their release as a priority on his hypothetical first day back in office, reported The Hill.
In 2023, at a fundraiser event in New Jersey, Trump had hinted at the possibility of pardoning some of the January 6 convicts. Additionally, on the third anniversary of the attack earlier this year, he reiterated his demand to President Joe Biden for the release of these individuals, labeling them as “hostages” of the January 6 events.
However, Trump’s latest pledge appears to contradict his earlier claims, where he had shifted blame onto the FBI and Antifa for the violence that occurred on January 6.
As per the Department of Justice, over 1,265 individuals have been arrested across almost all 50 states in connection with the January 6 attack. Of these, 452 face charges related to assaulting or impeding officers, while 123 are accused of using deadly weapons or causing severe bodily harm to law enforcement.
The events of January 6, widely condemned as an assault on democracy, were incited by Trump’s false claims of election fraud. Supporters, fueled by his baseless allegations of a stolen election, stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of President Biden’s victory.
Notably, Trump himself is facing legal challenges, with two federal indictments pending against him in Washington, DC, and Georgia, related to his efforts to overturn the election results.
Despite these legal battles, Trump is inching closer to securing the GOP nomination for the 2024 presidential election, setting the stage for a potential rematch with President Biden.
