President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to initiate one of the most extensive deportation efforts in American history, promising to target millions of undocumented immigrants from his first day in office. Trump’s intensified rhetoric on immigration has drawn attention, with repeated inflammatory descriptions of immigrants as “animals,” “monsters,” and “murderers” and a baseless claim that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.”

He has also falsely attributed a “surge in crime” to immigration, stating it’s “in their genes,” and even alleged they are “eating the pets” of Americans. According to Newsweek, Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s national press secretary, reaffirmed his plans, saying, “The American people delivered a resounding victory for President Trump, and it gives him a mandate to govern as he campaigned, to deliver on the promises that he made.”

Among these promises, Leavitt noted, is the plan to begin a sweeping deportation operation on “Day 1,” which she claims targets millions of undocumented immigrants. This operation, reportedly encompassing millions, represents one of the president-elect’s top priorities. Trump has consistently voiced strong opposition to what he views as permissive immigration policies under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he blames for the influx of undocumented immigrants.

In September, he painted a dire picture of American towns allegedly affected by immigration, saying, “What they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country… look at what’s happening to the towns all over the United States.” He went on to make a widely criticized and baseless claim, stating, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats.

They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame.” In the same month, Trump called for a radical approach to immigration, coining it “remigration” — a term associated with far-right nationalist ideologies that advocate for the forced deportation of immigrants, both documented and undocumented.

He pledged to end what he described as the “migrant invasion of America,” pledging to halt migrant flights, close borders, terminate certain immigration programs, and dismantle what he referred to as the “Kamala phone app” (a reference to the CBP One App used to facilitate border entry processes). Trump also vowed to “return Kamala’s illegal migrants to their home countries.”

The term “remigration” has roots in far-right, nationalist movements in Europe. NCRM noted that this policy is often promoted by figures within European far-right circles, yet is seen as too extreme by some of those very groups. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said to Politico Europe publicly distanced herself from the concept, expressing “total disagreement” with discussions about “remigration” in France, which some extremists had suggested should apply to “unassimilated citizens,” including certain French citizens.

The Washington Post reported that Trump has laid out a series of drastic actions he aims to implement on his first day in office, making a total of 41 distinct promises. In addition to mass deportations, these include controversial policies such as banning transgender women from sports, further underscoring his commitment to a hardline agenda.

Trump’s proposed policies have stirred criticism and concern from immigration advocates and human rights groups, who view them as excessively harsh and potentially damaging to the social fabric of the country. With his upcoming term, Trump’s approach to immigration and deportation signals a period of heightened tension around immigration issues in the United States, with sweeping policy changes expected in the early days of his administration.
