Donald Trump Criticizes Judge and Alleges Political Bias in Stormy Daniels Case
Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, unleashed a vehement critique against Justice Juan Merchan of the New York Supreme Court, who is overseeing Trump’s first criminal trial. This outburst followed Merchan’s decision to reject requests for additional delays, setting the jury selection for April 15 in a case involving allegations of hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
Trump utilized his platform on Truth Social to express his frustrations, vehemently arguing that the legal actions against him are rooted in political bias. Trump’s morning posts on the platform were particularly harsh towards Merchan, whom he accused of being biased and afflicted with what he termed “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
Despite acknowledging Merchan’s distinguished appearance, Trump insisted that the judge’s conduct revealed a deep-seated animosity towards him. He didn’t mince words in his posts, directly accusing Merchan of harboring hatred.
The attack wasn’t limited to Merchan; Trump, along with his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, also targeted Merchan’s daughter due to her senior position at a company they described as extremely liberal and connected to prominent Democratic figures, including Adam Schiff and Joe Biden. Trump insinuated that the judge’s unfair treatment of him was influenced by his daughter’s professional engagements, reported The Independent.
Despite these allegations, a New York advisory committee on judicial ethics previously concluded that there wasn’t sufficient basis to doubt Merchan’s impartiality, even considering his minimal contribution to the Biden-Harris campaign and his daughter’s job.
Trump’s critique extended to Merchan’s past judicial decisions, including the sentencing of Trump’s long-time accountant, Allen Weisselberg. Trump portrayed Merchan as overly harsh and cited another case where he believed Merchan demonstrated unfairness towards an elderly defendant, aiming to showcase a pattern of bias in Merchan’s rulings.
Throughout his tirade, Trump maintained his innocence, dismissing the legal challenges as part of a broader witch hunt by what he described as “country-destroying scoundrels & thugs.” His statements reflect his enduring strategy of confronting legal and political adversaries head-on, often through public and contentious discourse.
This episode underscores the ongoing tensions between Trump and the judicial figures involved in his numerous legal battles, as he continues to assert his stance against what he perceives as politically motivated prosecutions.
