WASHINGTON, D.C. — Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of Donald Trump, took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and ignited controversy with his remarks advocating for Trump to serve beyond the two-term presidential limit.
Bannon, known for his incendiary rhetoric, roused the right-wing audience by declaring, “The future of MAGA is Donald J. Trump!” He paused as attendees erupted in cheers before continuing, “We want Trump in ’28! That’s what they can’t stand! A man like Trump comes along only once or twice in a country’s history. Right? We want Trump! We want Trump! We want Trump!”

His statement quickly sparked criticism, as the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms, a restriction in place for more than 70 years. “Watch this clip, folks,” wrote independent journalist Aaron Rupar. “Does Bannon sound like he’s joking about Trump becoming dictator for life? Because he isn’t.”
Luke Zaleski, legal affairs editor at Condé Nast, commented, “Love it. Never takes off the barn jacket. He’s not staying long. He’s just here to make a permanent president with a chant.” Author Jennifer Erin Valent lambasted the statement, writing, “Stop calling it conservatism. This isn’t conservatism, this is insanity.”
Matt O’Brien, a former economics reporter for The Washington Post and author of the Obsolete Dogma newsletter, raised a legal concern. “I think there’s about a 40% chance the Supreme Court would say the 22nd amendment wouldn’t stop Trump from running in 2028 just like they said the 14th amendment didn’t stop him in 2024.”

Attorney Harris Peskin responded, “They’ll just say it’s up to Congress to enforce. He’s obviously running.” The progressive site Tennessee Holler issued a stark warning, writing, “BANNON: ‘We want Trump in 2028!’ Believe them. (Rep. Andy Ogles has already proposed a bill to enable it).”
Bannon’s comments at CPAC have reignited debates over Trump’s influence and the future of the MAGA movement while raising constitutional and political questions about the feasibility of a third Trump term.
