SACRAMENTO, CA — Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy faced a hostile reception in California on Thursday morning after he criticized the state’s long-anticipated high-speed rail project, calling it wasteful and subject to a “compliance review.”

Duffy, speaking at a press conference, reiterated the Trump administration’s skepticism about the project, arguing that it has been mismanaged and is a misuse of public funds. “President Trump has thought about this project, he’s talked about this project, and I think he was kind when he said that this project has been mismanaged,” Duffy told reporters.

His remarks were met with immediate jeers from the audience. Video footage from the event captured a wave of boos directed at Duffy, which quickly transitioned into chants of “Build the rail! Build the rail!” from frustrated attendees. At another point during the event, the crowd erupted into another chant, declaring, “We pay taxes, we want trains!” signaling strong public support for the rail initiative.

Attempting to shift blame, Duffy shouted back at the crowd, urging them to direct their frustration at California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Democratic-controlled state legislature, arguing they were responsible for the project’s stalled progress.

The high-speed rail project, which has been in development for decades, has faced numerous delays, funding issues, and political opposition. Despite the criticism, many Californians remain committed to the initiative, viewing it as a necessary step toward modernizing transportation and reducing carbon emissions.
