Obama’s Sharp Jab at Trump’s Obsession with ‘Size’ Sparks Laughter and Response
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, former President Barack Obama took a pointed jab at Donald Trump’s well-known obsession with crowd sizes, leaving the audience in stitches. The humorous remark continued to generate buzz, including on Friday’s edition of CNN’s The Situation Room, where host Wolf Blitzer discussed Trump’s reaction with analyst Maggie Haberman.
As reported by Mediaite, Blitzer introduced the segment by highlighting Obama’s quip. “I thought it was interesting that when President Obama took the stage at the Democratic Convention, he made a comment about Trump’s obsession with his crowd sizes. I want to play that clip. Listen to this.” The video showed Obama saying, “There’s the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, this weird obsession with crowd sizes.” Blitzer then asked, “How has that moment landed with the former president?”
Haberman responded, “So, both of the Obama speeches got under his skin. He is very reactive to both of them.” She noted that Trump’s sensitivity to Obama’s remarks dates back to 2011 when Trump promoted the false claim that Obama was not born in the U.S. and was therefore ineligible to be president. “I think you’re going to see more of this,” Haberman predicted.
Reflecting on the convention’s messaging, Haberman observed, “There was a pretty focused message about Trump, and we heard it over and over again, from the Obamas, from the vice president, from others, that, you know, he is a rich guy who cares about his rich friends.” She further analyzed, “But what you also saw were comments that I think were designed to bait Trump.” Haberman argued that these jabs could provoke Trump into reacting in ways that might benefit the Democrats. Blitzer agreed, noting, “Important point.”
In his speech, Obama didn’t just stop at crowd sizes. He also alluded to Trump’s incessant grievances, saying, “One thing is for certain. Donald Trump is not losing sleep over that question. Here’s a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It has been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually been getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala.”
Obama’s hand gestures during the speech suggested that Trump’s fixation on “size” might extend beyond just rally turnouts, adding a layer of humor to his critique. Trump quickly fired back, saying, “Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night taking little shots? He was taking shots at your president and so was Michelle. You know, they always say, ‘Sir, please stick to policy, don’t get personal,’ but they were getting personal all night, these people.”
As Obama argued, Trump has consistently attacked both Democratic and Republican opponents with mocking nicknames and baseless claims. Recently, he has referred to Harris as “Laffin’ Kamala” and “Lyin’ Kamala,” continuing his pattern of derogatory nicknames.
