Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan is pushing back against the idea that President Donald Trump’s sweeping changes to the federal government are exactly what voters wanted when they elected him. During an appearance on MSNBC’s The ReidOut on Wednesday, Hasan delivered a passionate critique of what he called a misleading narrative within MAGA circles—that Trump’s election victory gave him a blank check to implement radical policies both domestically and abroad.

“I keep hearing this line, ‘This is what people voted for.’ No, they didn’t,” Hasan said. “I don’t remember him on the campaign trail saying, ‘I’m going to take over Gaza.’ He didn’t promise it and by the way, the American public don’t want it.” Hasan dismissed the notion that Trump’s administration has broad public support for its drastic foreign and domestic policy shifts.
“So this is a lot of BS that’s being pushed, that they are somehow popular, that they have a mandate,” he argued. “They won by 1.5% in the popular vote. He didn’t win a majority of the popular vote. He didn’t say he was going to do half the stuff he was doing. I don’t remember war with Denmark being on the ballot.”
Hasan’s comments come as Trump faces backlash for his controversial foreign policy moves. Last week, the president stunned lawmakers and international observers by announcing that the U.S. would seize control of the Gaza Strip, vowing to transform it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”

Trump has also revived his previous push to purchase Greenland, citing national security concerns, and has refused to rule out a more aggressive approach to acquiring the autonomous Danish territory.
Hasan’s remarks reflect a growing concern among critics who argue that Trump’s policies are being dictated by impulse rather than a clear electoral mandate. As his administration continues to push unprecedented initiatives, the debate over whether Trump’s presidency truly reflects the will of the voters is only intensifying.
