Lauren Boebert Falsely Claims Trump’s Water Release Stopped California Wildfires

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) made an inaccurate claim this week, stating that recent wildfires near Los Angeles would still be burning if President Donald Trump had not ordered the military to release water from California dams.
Boebert made the remarks during a Republican press conference on government spending on Tuesday, where she criticized the federal disaster response under President Joe Biden. “Our tax dollars that are going to these NGOs and the ridiculous amount of payments that are going out, even to terrorists, do you have media here that is questioning this and saying, oh, well, they really can’t access it?” Boebert stated.

“Joe Biden couldn’t even rebuild after hurricanes when we have American citizens who are suffering.” She then pointed to wildfires in California as an example of bureaucratic inefficiency. “I mean, we have folks after the fire, the Palisade fire, who are still suffering,” Boebert continued. “And that’s mainly because of red tape.
And if it weren’t for President Trump opening up the spigot, I don’t know, it may still be on fire.” However, a fact-check by The Dispatch debunked Boebert’s statement, clarifying that Trump’s decision to release water from California dams had no impact on the wildfires in Southern California.

“The Southern California wildfires reached 100 percent containment on January 31, the same day that President Donald Trump announced on social media that he had ordered the release of more than 1 billion gallons of water from two California dams,” The Dispatch reported. “Trump did order that two Californian dams increase their water flow, but that water is not going to Southern California for firefighting operations.”
Firefighting experts also note that water released from dams is not typically used for wildfire suppression, as air tankers and ground crews primarily rely on reservoirs and other designated water sources for firefighting. Boebert’s comments drew swift criticism from fact-checkers and political analysts, who pointed out that misinformation about disaster response can contribute to public confusion.

While Trump’s order did direct water to certain areas of California, it was not linked to any fire containment efforts. Despite this, Boebert’s remarks reflect a broader trend of Republicans crediting Trump with actions that may not align with factual events.
With wildfires becoming an increasing threat in California due to climate change, experts emphasize the need for accurate information and effective disaster management rather than political rhetoric.
