Laura Loomer Escalates Racist Attacks on Kamala Harris, Questions Her Identity and Heritage
Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and strong ally of Donald Trump, has intensified her racist attacks on Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, reviving Trump’s birther rhetoric and questioning Harris’s lineage. Loomer recently took to social media and her platform to disparage the vice president, even going as far as retrieving Harris’s birth certificate to undermine her identity.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Loomer mocked Harris’s background, writing, “I decided to identify as a black woman. Therefore I am a black woman. That’s how you guys and @TheDemocrats said it works, right?” She continued this rhetoric during a segment on her Rumble show, Loomer Unleashed, where she provocatively claimed, “I’m not Black, obviously. I’m not going to pretend to be Black like Kamala Harris does, although I will say I’m blacker than Kamala Harris.”
Loomer’s tirade did not stop there. According to Media Matters, she accused Harris of pandering to Black Americans, questioning the vice president’s policies and intentions. “How much more is she going to pander to Black people?” Loomer asked, referencing Harris’s support for marijuana legalization. “Does she think that all Black people smoke marijuana? Does she think all Black men are drug addicts?”
In a particularly aggressive move, Loomer posted a copy of Harris’s birth certificate on social media, aiming to question Harris’s racial identity. “Nowhere on her birth certificate does it say that she is Black or African,” Loomer wrote, attempting to support Trump’s baseless theory that Harris is not truly a woman of color. She further attacked Harris’s family background, pointing to Harris’s paternal great-grandfather, Hamilton Brown, a slave owner in Jamaica, to disparage her heritage.
Trump himself has been linked to these claims, as he reposted Loomer’s findings on his Truth Social account, sparking widespread backlash. The Independent noted that Trump’s endorsement of Loomer’s racist rhetoric has only amplified the attacks against Harris.
Harris, who has always been proud of her Black heritage, previously addressed these baseless attacks on The Breakfast Club in 2019, saying, “I’m Black, and I’m proud of being Black, and I was born Black, I will die Black.” Despite the clear affirmation of her identity, conservatives like Loomer have sought to cast doubt on her background and even her speech.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy added to the criticism, questioning Harris’s speech pattern. “Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a Southern accent?” Doocy asked, echoing the conservative tactic of questioning Harris’s authenticity.
Critics, however, have pointed out that what Harris is engaging in is known as “code-switching,” a common practice where individuals adjust their tone and grammar depending on the audience. As noted by HuffPost’s Nathalie Baptiste, this is not unique to politicians and is frequently used by Black people and other marginalized groups to build cultural connections within their communities.
While conservatives continue to paint Harris as someone “posing” as Black, using her heritage as a political weapon, Loomer remains a vocal supporter of Trump on social media. However, Trump has made attempts to distance himself from Loomer, stating on Truth Social that they have differing opinions.
Loomer’s racist attacks highlight the ongoing attempts by far-right figures to discredit Harris’s identity as the vice president prepares for the 2024 election.
