White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has publicly backed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after sharing her own response to a controversial email demanding federal employees justify their roles—or risk termination.
The directive, issued by DOGE on Saturday, February 22, required all federal employees to submit a list of five tasks they had completed that week. The email, sent under the leadership of tech mogul Elon Musk, warned that “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.” Employees were given until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, February 24 to comply, Unilad reported

Despite the backlash, Musk stood firm, doubling down on the policy on X (formerly Twitter): “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week.” Rather than push back against the policy, Leavitt, the youngest-ever White House Press Secretary at 27 years old, enthusiastically complied.
She publicly released a copy of her email response, confirming that she had submitted it to Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich the day after the deadline. “Hello, Taylor. In an effort of transparency and accountability, I am pleased to inform you of five tasks that I completed last week, though the list of everything that I completed is much longer. See below,” Leavitt wrote.
Her five listed accomplishments included:
Holding a press briefing marking one month of the Trump Administration.
Delivering a speech at CPAC.
Staffing President Trump for CPAC.
Appearing on Fox News.
Participating in “media row in the EEEOB.”
She closed her email with a pointed remark:

“P.S. I am so grateful to have a job and work hard on behalf of the American taxpayers, who fund my salary. This email took me two minutes to draft. Thank you.” At a press briefing following the controversy, Leavitt defended the administration’s move, revealing that over one million federal employees had complied with the directive.
“All federal workers should be working at the same pace that President Trump is working and moving,” she stated. She further emphasized that the initiative was aimed at ensuring government efficiency and accountability. “We have a country to save, and we want this federal government to be responsive to the needs of the American people who re-elected this president to have historic, massive reform,” she asserted.

While critics argue the measure is an intimidation tactic aimed at slashing federal jobs, the Trump administration insists it is a necessary step toward government accountability and reform. As the debate rages on, federal employees across the country are left wondering whether their weekly task reports will determine their future in public service.
