Kamala Harris Sparks Debate After Chugging Beer on ‘The Late Show’: Critics Call Out ‘Casual’ VP
Kamala Harris made headlines with her laid-back appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she shared a candid moment not typically seen from a presidential candidate. In the episode, the Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee casually sipped a can of Miller High Life, showing a side of herself that many viewers had never seen before.
Colbert, knowing the sensitivity of the situation, explained to the audience that the show had obtained prior approval before offering Harris a beer. “We can’t just be giving a drink to the vice president of the United States,” he quipped. Harris, clearly on board with the plan, bonded with Colbert over music and the election while enjoying the casual setting, as per HuffPost.
When the conversation shifted to her Republican rival, Donald Trump, and his claims about the 2020 election, Harris didn’t hold back. “You know, I’m going to tell you what some of the people in my rallies—quite a few people show up, by the way—say. You know, when you lost millions of jobs, lost manufacturing, lost automotive plants, and lost the election, what does that make you? A loser,” she remarked, referencing comments from her supporters. Laughing, she admitted, “I thought it was funny,” noting the beer was starting to take effect. “This is what happens when I drink beer,” she added, letting out her signature laugh.
The moment didn’t sit well with Trump’s camp. The pro-Trump account @TrumpWarRoom on X (formerly Twitter) wasted no time condemning her behavior. “She was bilking her rich San Francisco donors out of their cash as North Carolinians were clinging to their rooftops in desperation. Now, she’s boozing with washed-up late-night hosts as the biggest hurricane in years comes ashore. She doesn’t care about you.”
The post sparked a flurry of criticism from Trump supporters. One user, @endlibtyranny, commented, “Just another day in La-La Land where hurricanes and priorities don’t mix! Remember folks, the state will never prioritize communities. Stay strong, NC!” Another, @ThomasPaineBand, declared, “Kamala is a total disaster for America. Trump cannot be beaten in a fair election!” Others like @FunniesGalore mocked her campaign’s struggles: “Well, her campaign is imploding, so she might as well enjoy the perks while she can before it all falls apart.”
@IheartTesla urged voters to take Harris’s actions as a warning: “We must unite to keep Harris out of the White House; otherwise, this beautiful country will get even more destroyed from within.”
Interestingly, both of her recent predecessors, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, abstain from alcohol due to family histories of alcoholism. The New York Times has reported that Trump’s brother passed away due to alcohol abuse, while Biden’s uncle also struggled with heavy drinking.
Harris’s casual and candid moment on The Late Show may have aimed to humanize her and connect with voters, but it also opened her up to criticism, particularly from Trump’s supporters. As the campaign trail heats up, every move and moment—especially those involving a drink—seems to hold the potential to ignite controversy.
