Inauguration Day 2025 delivered its share of peculiar moments, questionable fashion choices, and a MAGA celebration that felt like a throwback to 2016. But while most attendees reveled in the Trumpian festivities, Elon Musk found himself at the center of awkward post-event drama—this time involving Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump.
Musk’s role in Donald Trump’s campaign was an unexpected twist in the 2024 election. As the Tesla CEO-turned-political player, Musk earned praise for his contributions, even sparking speculation that he might overshadow Vice President JD Vance as Trump’s new favorite ally.
However, at the swearing-in ceremony, Musk appeared sidelined, receiving little acknowledgment from the newly re-elected president. Seemingly unfazed—or perhaps compensating—Musk later took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Ivanka Trump’s appearance at the Commander-In-Chief Ball.
“Making fashion beautiful again,” Musk tweeted, referencing Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” slogan. While the message may have seemed harmless, its phrasing quickly raised eyebrows. According to Nicki Swift, Musk’s choice of the word “beautiful” rather than more neutral terms like “elegant” or “refined” felt suggestive to some, fueling rumors online.
Netizens were quick to react, with one user writing, “Something cooking!” Another asked, “@elonmusk you flirting with Jared’s wife?” referring to Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner. “Something brewing up Ivanka and Elon’s love affair??” one person speculated, while another joked, “You’re definitely sleeping outside tonight.”
The timing of Musk’s tweet is particularly notable, given Ivanka’s strained relationship with her father. After stepping away from politics following Trump’s first term, Ivanka has kept a low profile, focusing on family life in Miami. She previously admitted to being “miserable” during Trump’s presidency and has shown little interest in returning to the political spotlight.
Despite her distance from politics, Ivanka remains an influential figure in Trump’s inner circle, albeit in an informal capacity. According to her close friend Maggie Cordish, Ivanka is “done with politics” but continues to provide advice behind the scenes.
“Ivanka Trump is done with politics and says she isn’t coming back,” Cordish told CNN. “She’s still his daughter and a trusted voice, so in that sense, an informal adviser, as we all are with our family members.”
Meanwhile, Musk’s position as head of Trump’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) appears secure—for now. However, his penchant for stirring the pot, combined with Trump’s history of delivering his iconic “You’re fired!” catchphrase, could make his role precarious.
For now, both Ivanka and Musk are keeping their next moves close to their chest, but the internet’s fascination with their every interaction isn’t likely to fade anytime soon.
