Unconfirmed rumors about Barack and Michelle Obama’s relationship have sparked public speculation, fueled further by Meghan McCain and journalist Tara Palmieri during a podcast discussion. The rumors gained traction after Michelle skipped both President Trump’s inauguration and Jimmy Carter’s funeral, events Barack attended alone.
McCain shared that she’s heard whispers of a potential split from credible sources. “I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people. I’m not talking about TMZ. I’m talking about very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing the Obama divorce rumors are true,” McCain stated.
Palmieri added fuel to the gossip, saying, “We’ve heard that for a long time, like I just heard that they live separate lives.” The pair scrutinized Barack’s recent Instagram post celebrating Michelle’s birthday, where he shared a candid photo of them holding hands over dinner. “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama,” Barack captioned the photo.
However, McCain and Palmieri criticized the picture’s quality and implications. “I would kill Ben if he put a picture of me looking like no makeup with that lighting on social media,” McCain joked, referencing her husband. “For me, it didn’t help the rumors. Why are you putting this s****y picture of your wife up?”
Palmieri speculated that Michelle’s minimal public presence signals her desire to move away from Washington politics. “She clearly has very little interest—she’s always hated politics. She did not really like being First Lady,” Palmieri said.
Despite the speculation, Michelle shared Barack’s post on her own Instagram account with a simple caption: “Love you, honey!” The couple, who have been married since 1992, has been open about the struggles in their marriage, reported Daily Mail.
Michelle has spoken about “resentment” over putting her career on hold to raise their daughters while Barack’s career thrived. Both have acknowledged the immense pressure during their White House years but emphasized their enduring respect for one another.
Barack previously told The Breakfast Club: “We never lost basic respect for the other person… Even if [Michelle] drives me crazy sometimes, I never thought there was anybody who I would rather be with.”
