The district attorney is requesting that the mother who killed the 4-year-old and left her body in a bag be executed

This week, prosecutors took a significant step in the legal proceedings surrounding the tragic death of a 4-year-old child by filing a court document indicating their intent to pursue the death penalty against the caregiver involved.

In the formal filing authored by Caddo County District Attorney Jason Hicks, it was outlined that Alysia Adams is being considered for the death penalty due to allegations that she knowingly endangered the lives of multiple individuals. Furthermore, the document highlighted the particularly egregious nature of the circumstances surrounding the death of Athena Brownfield, describing it as “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel.”

The chain of events leading to this legal action began on January 10, 2023, when a concerned mail carrier contacted Cyril Police upon discovering a 5-year-old girl unattended outside a residence. Subsequent investigation by law enforcement, including assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, revealed that Brownfield and her sister had been under Adams’ care for approximately a year before the younger girl’s tragic disappearance.

Alysia Adams was subsequently arrested on charges related to child neglect, while her husband, Ivon Adams, was apprehended in Arizona and extradited to Oklahoma to face charges of murder and child neglect.

The search for Athena Brownfield spanned several days until January 17, 2023, when remains discovered were positively identified as belonging to her. Reports from KOCO-TV indicated that Brownfield’s cause of death was determined to be acute pneumonia compounded by severe malnutrition. Shockingly, at the time of her death, Brownfield weighed a mere 23 pounds and was found to have contracted several viruses, including COVID-19.

Details emerging from Ivon Adams’ affidavit shed light on the distressing circumstances endured by the surviving 5-year-old sister, who reportedly referred to Alysia Adams as “mom” and Ivon Adams as both “dad” and “uncle Ivon.” In her interactions with investigators, the young girl expressed her exhaustion with being left alone.

As legal proceedings unfold, the pursuit of justice for Athena Brownfield continues to garner significant attention and condemnation of the alleged actions leading to her untimely demise.
