Investigation Reveals Newborn Found in Yard Born in Nearby Home: 15-Year-Old Neighbor Identified as Mother
During the Thanksgiving weekend, a newborn baby was found abandoned in the backyard of a home in Palatka, Florida, a town located approximately 60 miles south of Jacksonville. The infant was discovered early Sunday morning, November 26, around 12:40 a.m., according to a news release by the Palatka police.
The baby found naked and with the umbilical cord still attached, was wrapped in a blanket when a local resident called the police to report the incident. Upon arrival, police officers confirmed that the child had been recently born.
The person who found the baby informed the officers that they were unaware of the infant’s origin or who had left the baby in their yard. The newborn was quickly transported to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital by Putnam County EMS, where it was reported to be in stable condition and doing well.
Further investigation by the authorities led them to believe that the baby was born in a nearby residence and then placed in the yard. Evidence at the scene supported this theory, and it was subsequently discovered that a 15-year-old girl living in the adjacent house had given birth to the child.
Per the Miami Herald, The circumstances surrounding how the infant ended up in the backyard have not been disclosed, and there has been no report of any charges being filed at this time. The investigation into this matter is still ongoing. On the night of the incident, the weather in Palatka was notably cool, with temperatures dropping to around 59 degrees, as reported by AccuWeather.
