Authorities in Tennessee are investigating the tragic death of 13-year-old Savannah Copeland, a middle school cheerleader who was fatally stabbed by a 15-year-old boy. The suspect, identified as Malakiah Harris, has been charged with second-degree murder, according to Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler.

Savannah’s body was discovered on a trail in Knox County on Tuesday, November 12, after she had been reported missing overnight. Investigators say Harris used a pocket knife to stab Savannah multiple times, resulting in fatal injuries.

Her father, Michael Copeland, told local Fox 19 News that he sensed something was wrong after not hearing from Savannah for several hours. Using the Life360 app, Michael was able to help authorities locate her, leading them to the dirt trail where her body was found.

“Right now there’s not a lot of joy or genuine happiness,” Michael said in the interview. Reflecting on the senseless violence, he added, “I think it was a lack of compassion, a lack of empathy, that took my daughter’s life. I’m not going to allow myself to be filled with that kind of rage. It’s going to be filled with compassion—it’s the only way I know how to defeat evil.”

In memory of Savannah, a makeshift memorial has been set up at the site where her body was discovered. Her cheerleading team at Powell Middle School has announced plans to create an annual award in her honor, which will be given to the teammate who best embodies Savannah’s spirited personality.

“Spunkiness, eagerness, and a go-getter attitude,” Michael said when describing his daughter’s character. He expressed gratitude that her memory will continue to inspire others.

Savannah’s obituary highlighted her many talents and aspirations. “Savannah attended Powell Middle School and was a talented student as well as an accomplished athlete—excelling in gymnastics, karate, and cheerleading. She wanted to go to UT and study forensic anthropology. She enjoyed scary stories, drawing, and pop music. Savannah and her family have been longtime members of the Powell United Methodist Church.”

Authorities have not yet released information about a possible motive or clarified whether Savannah knew the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing, and Harris is scheduled to appear in court again on January 15.

This tragic incident has left the Knox County community in mourning as they remember Savannah as a bright, ambitious young girl whose life was cut far too short.
