Shakira Opens Up About Single Motherhood After Split From Gerard Piqué

Global pop sensation Shakira has opened up about the challenges of raising her two sons as a single mother following her separation from Spanish football star Gerard Piqué.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the Waka Waka singer reflected on life after her breakup, revealing that navigating single motherhood can sometimes feel overwhelming.

“I am in charge of these two children, these two babies who depend so much on me and I am a single mother, I don’t have a husband or a housewife to help me with anything,” said Shakira, 48, who shares sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10, with Piqué, 38.

Despite the challenges, the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker credited music as her biggest source of healing. “Songs evolve, they live their own life… they evolve in people’s lives,” she explained. “They become the soundtrack for many people, including myself.”

Shakira also shared how her music serves as a personal timeline, allowing her to reflect on different emotional chapters of her life. “I remember chapters of my life through my own music and where I was at then emotionally and mentally,” the Grammy Award-winning artist added.

Recently, the devoted mother shared a touching moment with her sons at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where she celebrated her win for Best Latin Pop Album with a heartfelt hug during the ceremony.

Shakira and Piqué first met in 2010 and made their relationship official in 2011. Two years later, they welcomed their first son, Milan, followed by Sasha in 2015. The couple remained one of the entertainment world’s most high-profile duos until rumors of Piqué’s infidelity surfaced, leading to their widely publicized split in 2022.

While focusing on her children and career, Shakira has also found love again. In 2024, she rekindled her romantic life with Emily in Paris star Lucien Laviscount, marking a new chapter in both her personal and professional journey.
