Tilda Swinton is stepping away from acting—at least for now. The Oscar-winning actress revealed that once she wraps up her time at the Berlin Film Festival, she’ll be heading back to Scotland for a much-needed break.

“I need a break, and I’m going to have one,” Swinton shared with reporters, acknowledging that filmmaking can be relentless. “We all know filmmaking is a merciless mistress, and I have been under the lash for a while.”

Swinton, known for her dedication to her craft, has been looking forward to this hiatus for years. “When I go home to Scotland on Monday, I am entering something that I have been looking forward to for 15 years, which is a period of my life when I do something different,” she said. “I can’t quite say what it is, but I can say I’m not shooting a film for the rest of this year.”

While she isn’t completely stepping away from creative work, she emphasized that she needs time to develop several projects—some for film and some outside of cinema. She also spoke about the mounting pressures in the indie film world, especially post-pandemic, where securing financing means actors must jump into production immediately.

“Things have got a little crazy,” she admitted. Before COVID, filmmakers could often delay production to allow for further development, but now, once funding is secured, there’s a rush to shoot. “That feeling of smash and grab, and the insecurity about finance, has been really strenuous for us all. I need a break, so I am going to have one.”

Her announcement came just after she received the prestigious Honorary Golden Bear at the festival, where she delivered a powerful speech. She condemned global injustices and criticized governments that align with what she called “planet wreckers and war criminals.”

Swinton also addressed her decision to attend the festival despite calls from the BDS movement to boycott the ongoing conflict in Gaza. She explained that, while she respects the movement, she felt her presence at the event could be more impactful.

“I’m a great admirer of and have a great deal of respect for BDS, and I think about it a lot,” she said. “I decided it was more important for me to come. I was given a platform, which I decided in a personal moment was potentially more useful to all our causes than me not turning up.”

She acknowledged differing opinions but stood by her choice. “What we’re all up against is this feeling of powerlessness and helplessness, so any powerful action or gesture we can make feels like a good option. I understand that boycotting can feel, and often is, the most powerful thing we can do.”

With her acting break ahead, fans will have to wait to see what Swinton does next, but one thing is clear—she’s not slowing down creatively, just taking a step back from the nonstop pace of Hollywood.
