Shakira recently revealed how she coped with her breakup with her longtime partner, Gerard Piqué. In a candid interview for the cover story of GQ Spain, the pop superstar shared her emotional journey, describing how the process of healing after their split wasn’t straightforward.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer admitted that grief is not a linear experience and reflected on how she initially remained silent for months, unable to fully confront the pain. “It wasn’t easy to acknowledge all the vulnerability I was feeling at the time,” Shakira explained. “For many months after my separation, I remained silent, trying to begin mourning, but I couldn’t truly start grieving until I began writing music.”

The breakthrough came when Shakira turned to music to express her emotions, which led to the creation of her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (“Women Don’t Cry Anymore”). The act of writing allowed her to channel her feelings and begin to heal from the heartbreak. Despite the difficulty of turning her vulnerabilities into lyrics, Shakira said it was the key to starting her recovery.

“It was really tough for me to recognize all of my vulnerabilities in a song and then put them together into lyrics for the entire world to hear,” she shared. “But that is what began my healing process. It was my way of healing. And it continues to be. Grief is not a linear process; it’s full of peaks and valleys.”

Shakira and Piqué, who were together for over a decade, officially called it quits in June 2022. Their separation sparked rumors that Piqué had been unfaithful, though Shakira has since denied that cheating was the reason behind their breakup.

While the end of their relationship was undoubtedly painful, Shakira’s music has once again become her refuge, helping her process the emotions tied to the end of their long-term relationship. As she continues to heal, Shakira’s openness about her journey serves as a reminder that grief and healing are deeply personal and often unpredictable paths.
