Kristen Bell and her husband, Dax Shepard, are equally thrilled about her new Netflix rom-com Nobody Wants This. In a recent interview with E! News, the Veronica Mars alum shared Shepard’s enthusiastic response to her steamy on-screen romance with co-star Brody.
“Even I can acknowledge watching it, like, ‘Whoa, that’s hot,’” Bell, 44, told the outlet, reflecting on the chemistry between her and Brody. She also revealed that her husband, Shepard, 49, had similar thoughts. “My husband said the same thing,” Bell added, noting that Shepard was so invested in the scenes that he wanted the characters to take their physical intimacy even further after watching the first episode.
However, Bell explained that achieving the romantic tension on screen wasn’t as simple as it may appear. “I’m not trying to be reductive, but I think there’s a math to it,” she said. She described how important it is for actors to master the subtlety of romance: “You have two actors that know how to stare dopily into each other’s eyes, and you have to have the confidence to expand that and really build the anticipatory value before the kiss—which I think is really important.”
Bell also acknowledged the unpredictability of romantic pairings in shows. “Whether or not people want to see you end up with someone is a crap shoot, and we just kind of got lightning in a bottle,” she said, referring to the chemistry she and Brody share in the series. Nobody Wants This premiered on Netflix on September 26, and both Bell and Shepard are excited about the buzz it’s creating.
