Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) took aim at Republicans during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on government censorship, calling out members for what he described as “self-censorship” regarding their private opinions about former President Donald Trump.
During the hearing, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Swalwell addressed the committee, delivering a pointed critique of the discussion. “You were promised cheap eggs, and today you’re getting cheap shots, and there’s probably no better natural remedy for insomnia than a congressional hearing on anti-censorship,” Swalwell remarked, setting the tone for his argument.

Despite their political differences, he acknowledged his often-heated exchanges with Jordan. “I’ll credit Chairman Jordan. He and I have had some spirited debates in this hearing room. Sometimes, they’ve gotten quite personal by both of us,” Swalwell noted. “And sometimes when I land a point, he gets upset, his staff gets upset, but he takes it like a man, and he’ll make his point right back at me, and I take it like a man.”
However, Swalwell then shifted his focus to the former president. “You know who doesn’t take it like a man?” he asked rhetorically. “Donald Trump, because he’s not a man. He’s a child. He’s a small child.” Swalwell, a father of three, argued that Trump’s behavior mirrored that of a toddler.
He then accused Republican members of the committee of acknowledging this fact in private while refusing to say so publicly. “And yes, censorship is occurring, but it’s self-censorship, and it’s by you all,” Swalwell asserted. “Because I hear you in our private conversations when you agree that Trump is a child.”

“I hear the people you tell that Trump is a child, whether it’s lobbyists or reporters,” he continued. “But you shrink in this room, and you shrink in the chamber, and you self-censor yourselves from speaking out because you’re afraid.”

His remarks underscored the deep divisions within the Republican Party, as some members continue to align with Trump publicly while allegedly harboring doubts behind closed doors. Swalwell’s comments quickly gained attention, highlighting the ongoing struggle over Trump’s influence within the GOP.
As the hearing continued, Jordan and other Republicans largely avoided responding directly to Swalwell’s accusations, instead focusing on their broader concerns about censorship. However, the moment served as a stark reminder of the internal tensions shaping the party’s future.
