40-Year-Old Texas Woman Allegedly Shoots Husband, Torches Truck, and Attempts Kayak Escape
A 40-year-old Texas woman is in custody after deputies accused her of fatally shooting her common-law husband, setting his truck on fire, and attempting to flee using a kayak.
Faith Paige Goynes, 40, allegedly shot 30-year-old Tomas Calavera Jr., who was discovered dead during a welfare check on Monday afternoon at a home on Gunsight Pass in west Bexar County. According to authorities, Calavera was found in a closet with a fatal gunshot wound to the face. Nearby, his 2024 GMC pickup truck was discovered ablaze, reports from KENS.
A witness reported seeing Goynes walking away from the scene after “extinguishing” the burning truck. When deputies, aided by a Texas Parks and Wildlife officer, arrived, they located Goynes paddling away in a kayak. She was immediately apprehended.
The aftermath of the fire revealed extensive damage to the truck’s interior. Investigators found a yellow gas can and a lighter near the vehicle. Additionally, Goynes was reportedly in possession of Calavera’s identification and had severe burn injuries on her right hand, the KSAT reported.
After being taken into custody, Goynes allegedly confessed to a Calhoun County deputy that she had shot Calavera, stolen his truck, and later set it on fire. She has been charged with murder and arson resulting in serious bodily injury or death, according to Calhoun County Jail records.
Calavera’s father, informed of the tragic incident by the Bandera County Sheriff’s Office, expressed shock and disbelief. The family is now left grappling with the devastating loss.
This incident is part of a string of tragic events in the area. Just weeks earlier, a San Antonio police officer accidentally shot himself outside Columbia Heights Elementary School while retrieving belongings from his vehicle. Officer William Kasberg’s pistol discharged unexpectedly, striking him fatally. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
These disturbing events have rocked the community, leaving residents seeking answers and authorities urging vigilance. As the investigation into Goynes’’s actions continues, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety in all aspects.
