Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) faced fierce criticism from her Democratic rival, Trisha Calvarese, following their recent debate, with Calvarese accusing Boebert of “melting down” on stage. The heated exchange came after Calvarese highlighted Boebert’s voting record on key issues, including veterans’ benefits and prescription drug pricing, as reported by Newsweek.

“Lauren Boebert melted down on the debate stage today,” Calvarese tweeted after the debate. “Whether it was floundering to try to defend her disgraceful record on Veterans or having no explanation as to why she missed crucial house votes, she was held accountable for her extremism.”

During the debate, Calvarese called out Boebert for her vote against a bill that aimed to provide benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits. Calvarese pointedly criticized Boebert’s position, stating, “I think if you’re going to be America first, you can’t put veterans last.” The sharp rebuke was one of several moments where Calvarese pressed Boebert on her legislative record.

Boebert, who is now running in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District after narrowly winning reelection in her former district by less than 600 votes in 2022, struggled to defend her record during the debate. Despite her new district being more conservative, Boebert has faced accusations of being a carpetbagger, as she switched districts to increase her chances of reelection.

In addition to her voting record, Boebert has been under fire for a number of controversies, including an infamous incident where she was expelled from a performance of the “Beetlejuice” musical. Reports claim she was vaping in the theater and engaging in inappropriate behavior with her date, further fueling criticism of her public conduct.

Calvarese’s strategy during the debate seemed to focus on holding Boebert accountable for her missed votes and opposition to popular legislation, including a bill that would allow Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices—another point that Calvarese hammered home during the debate.

As Boebert continues her campaign in the 4th District, she faces growing scrutiny not only for her voting record but also for her public behavior, with her opponent determined to capitalize on these controversies. The debate provided a preview of what is likely to be a hard-fought race, with Calvarese determined to keep Boebert on the defensive.
