Why Meghan Markle ‘Deserves’ Colombia Trip, Vice President Reveals
The true reason behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Colombia has been unveiled. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who were warmly welcomed to Colombia by Vice President Francia Márquez, made the trip following the release of their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan.
In a speech delivered ahead of their arrival, Vice President Márquez expressed her admiration for the couple, stating, “I learned their story through Netflix and I was moved by it. Meghan is a woman who deserves to come to the country and tell her story.”
Márquez highlighted Meghan’s heritage, emphasizing the significance of her visit. “Last year, we held a meeting on July 25, the day of Afro-descendant women. We wanted to invite Meghan, an Afro-descendant woman, to that meeting so she could share her experiences,” Márquez explained. Despite extending an invitation to Meghan, she was unable to attend at the time but expressed a strong desire to visit the country in the future.
The Vice President continued, “Since then, we have been working for a year to make this visit happen.” She also reflected on the significance of Prince Harry’s presence in Colombia, noting, “I think that Prince Harry being here today after that dream of his mum’s of visiting this country is an opportunity to show the best of our nation, to show who Colombians are.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020, relocating to California with their son, Prince Archie. In a move that captured global attention, the couple later accused the Royal Family of racism towards their son, sharing their grievances in a series of public interviews. Since their departure, they have continued to engage in various humanitarian efforts, including this recent visit to Colombia, where they were eager to connect with the country and its people.
Their visit not only marks a significant moment for Meghan, given her roots and the ongoing dialogue around racial identity but also serves as an opportunity for the couple to build bridges and foster understanding between cultures.
