A decades-old clip of Cindy Crawford’s 1986 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show has resurfaced, sparking controversy over how the young model was treated on national television. The now 59-year-old supermodel reflected on the uncomfortable moment in The Super Models, an Apple TV+ docu-series released in 2023.
Crawford recalled feeling pressured when Winfrey asked her to stand up and show off her body, an experience that she now sees in a different light. During the segment, Winfrey turned to Crawford—who was just 20 years old at the time—and asked, “Did she always have this body?” The talk show host then directed Crawford to stand up, declaring, “Now this is what I call a BODY.”

Crawford, visibly nervous, complied as the audience observed her figure. Looking back on that moment decades later, Crawford admitted in the documentary that she felt objectified. “I was like the chattel or a child, to be seen and not heard,” she said, emphasizing how the experience now feels inappropriate in hindsight, told Daily Mail.
“When you look at it through today’s eyes, Oprah’s like, ‘Stand up and show me your body. Show us why you’re worthy of being here,'” Crawford reflected. She added, “At the moment I didn’t recognize it, and watching it back I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was so not okay really,’ especially from Oprah!”

At the time of the 1986 interview, Crawford appeared alongside John Casablancas, her representative from Elite Modeling Agency, who spoke on her behalf as Winfrey directed questions at him rather than the young model.

The resurfaced clip has reignited discussions about the way young women, particularly models, were treated in the entertainment industry during the 1980s and ’90s. Critics argue that Crawford’s experience is a prime example of how the industry often objectified young women, reducing them to their appearances rather than their voices.
Neither Oprah Winfrey nor her representatives have publicly responded to Crawford’s comments in The Super Models. However, social media users have weighed in, with some expressing disappointment in Winfrey’s handling of the moment, while others argue that cultural norms have significantly shifted since the 1980s.
As Crawford’s remarks continue to make waves, the clip serves as a reminder of how attitudes toward body image, consent, and representation have evolved over time.
