GOP Infighting Escalates as Byron Donalds Clashes With Speaker Mike Johnson Over Trump’s Agenda
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) is drawing increasing ire from his fellow House Republicans as he openly criticizes Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) over delays in advancing President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, The Daily Beast reported.
Tensions within the GOP have escalated as lawmakers debate the best way to push forward with key policies. Trump and House Republicans favor passing a single, sweeping bill that includes provisions on energy, border security, and tax cuts, aiming to use it as leverage in negotiations with the far-right Freedom Caucus.
Meanwhile, the Senate prefers splitting tax cuts into a separate bill to increase the likelihood that at least part of Trump’s agenda will pass. Donald has been particularly vocal in his frustration over the slow pace of legislation, irritating some of his colleagues in the process. One anonymous Republican lawmaker expressed frustration with his behavior.
“Byron Donalds is more and more frequently being obnoxious towards the speaker. Angry at the time it’s taking. Parroting [Rep.] Chip [Roy]. I don’t mind making one’s point, but the rudeness is uncalled for,” the lawmaker told The Daily Beast.
The source added that Donald exhibited similar behavior at the House GOP retreat at Trump’s Miami property. “He did the same in Miami.” Donalds, a rising star within the pro-Trump wing of the party and a potential candidate for Florida governor, dismissed complaints about his confrontational approach.
“Everybody’s frustrated. If they think it’s rude to have a direct conversation with the leadership, as opposed to everybody slapping each other on the back, then so be it,” Donalds told The Daily Beast. He is not alone in his frustration. Another GOP lawmaker expressed growing impatience with the drawn-out process of internal discussions.
“This isn’t rocket science,” the lawmaker said, adding that they were tired of “listening sessions over and over and over again” from House leadership without concrete action. As House Republicans remain locked in disagreement, the Senate is moving ahead with its own approach. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a key figure in budget negotiations, has introduced a $300 billion budget resolution focusing on defense and border security.
With growing divisions in the party, Johnson faces increasing pressure to balance competing factions within the GOP while trying to keep Trump’s legislative priorities on track. Whether Donald’s confrontational stance will push leadership into action or further fracture the party remains to be seen.
