WASHINGTON – Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) gained momentum Monday after Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) signaled her support, boosting President Donald Trump’s effort to install her in the position.
Collins, a key Republican swing vote, defended her decision in a statement, citing her role in crafting the 2004 Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, which established the DNI position. “As one of the principal authors of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 that established this coordinating position, I understand the critical role the DNI plays in the intelligence community,” Collins said.
“The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, however, has become far larger than it was designed to be, and Ms. Gabbard shares my vision of returning the agency to its intended size.” Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who has drawn criticism for promoting Russian-aligned viewpoints, faced skepticism over her past support for Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who leaked classified information before seeking asylum in Russia.
Collins, however, said Gabbard “addressed my concerns” regarding Snowden, suggesting she was reassured by their discussions. Collins’ endorsement drew swift reactions across the political spectrum. Trump loyalists celebrated the development, while critics condemned the senator for backing a nominee widely regarded as controversial.

“Why bother even being a Senator if you think Tulsi Gabbard is fit for DNI?” wrote Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL). “Just admit you’re a g-d rubber stamp for a felonious rapist.” “This is not good,” wrote American Enterprise Institute leadership fellow Andrew Eastmond. “Susan Collins’ spine appears to have gone the way of Lindsey Graham’s. Maybe the ghost of McCain needs to pay them a visit…”
“Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic,” added Bridgeport, Pennsylvania Councilman Tony Heyl. Gabbard’s nomination has reignited debates over her foreign policy positions and alignment with Trump’s political agenda. Former MSNBC commentator Mehdi Hasan criticized the GOP for failing to challenge the former president’s decisions, tweeting, “GOP senators fall into line. Again.”
Meanwhile, former Obama adviser T.J. Adams-Falconer ridiculed Collins’ move, writing, “Susan Collins continues to prove herself a classically trained clown.” With Collins’ backing, Gabbard’s confirmation process now hinges on a handful of key votes as both parties brace for what is expected to be a contentious battle over the intelligence community’s future direction.
