Cher, the legendary singer and actress, recently opened up about the emotional and arduous process of writing her highly anticipated memoir. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she shared insights into the creation of Cher: The Memoir, the first installment of her deeply personal life story.

The writing journey, Cher admitted, was anything but glamorous. “Sometimes at the day’s end, I would really be tired,” she revealed. The months-long process of revisiting her past took a toll on her. “We did this for months—going back and forward. But sometimes I would just say, ‘You guys, I just can’t do this anymore. I will be so glad when this is over.’ Because sometimes when we were in the bad part, the bad part weighed so heavily. Now it’s over, and it’s not a part of me.”

The memoir covers pivotal moments in Cher’s life, from her marriage to Sonny Bono to her challenging childhood. Initially hesitant to reveal too much, the icon later decided that if she was going to tell her story, she would do so authentically.

“It’s hard telling everything about your life,” Cher explained. “Some things really don’t belong. I wasn’t as forthcoming in the first version.” Reflecting on her mindset shift, she added, “Then I thought, I don’t want to do this because if you’re going to tell your life, you’ve got to tell your life. So, I went back and made the decision to say much more than I actually wanted to. There are only a few things that are just so private, I can’t.”

For Cher, embracing vulnerability became central to the memoir’s narrative. “These are stories that happened, and even though some of them are rough, how do you tell your story without telling your story?” she asked. “I was afraid to do it in the beginning. But once I made the decision to do it, I just made the decision.”

Cher: The Memoir promises an unfiltered glimpse into the life of one of entertainment’s most enduring figures, offering fans a chance to see beyond the glitz and glamour that define her public persona. By confronting the highs and lows of her journey, Cher has created a work that is not only deeply personal but also universally resonant. As readers dive into the first installment, they’ll gain a new appreciation for the woman behind the legend.
