A heartbreaking accident in Shoreline, Washington, has left a community mourning the loss of 4-year-old Mi’layah Marie, who tragically died after falling from her apartment window during what started as a playful game. Mi’layah had been joyfully jumping on her bed near an open window when she lost her balance, causing her to fall against the screen, which gave way, sending her plummeting to the ground below.

Eyewitnesses immediately sprang into action, with one individual rushing to the scene to provide CPR until emergency services arrived. The young girl was rushed to the hospital, but despite their efforts, she tragically succumbed to her injuries. “I went around the back after I heard someone screaming,” witness Andre Alexander told KIRO. “When I went back there, I saw the young girl had fallen out the window. There was a young man there who did over four and a half minutes of CPR by himself—he’s a real hero.”

The Medical Examiner confirmed that Mi’layah died from blunt force trauma caused by the fall. Her devastated mother, Najaha Chancellor, spoke through her grief, recalling the moment the accident happened. “She bumped into it, the screen fell off, and she went down,” Chancellor shared. “I completely lost it.”

Overcome with grief, Chancellor expressed the deep pain and sorrow of losing her beloved daughter. “As a mother, it’s your job to protect your children at all costs,” she said. “I’m just trying to keep it together. I still have three other kids to show strength for, but I’m never going to get over this. It’s different when it’s your child—it’s absolutely different”, reported People.

Chancellor also paid tribute to Mi’layah’s bright spirit, describing her as “caring” and “outgoing.” “She just made everyone happy, it didn’t matter who it was,” she shared. “Everyone loved her, cared about her.” Chancellor fondly remembered her daughter’s love for simple pleasures, like bananas and swimming. “Swimming was one of her greatest joys; she loved splashing around and enjoying the freedom the water gave her. Mi’layah was smart, playful, and beautiful, and her memory will forever be a part of our family.”

In an emotional statement, Chancellor expressed the depth of her grief: “I love you, Mi’layah Marie, you were my world, baby girl. I’m still so speechless right now. Almost a week of no food, barely any rest. I wake up at the same time every day, and the pain never leaves. I just wish going back in time was possible.”

The tragic loss of Mi’layah has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and community, with many struggling to comprehend the loss of such a vibrant and joyful child. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
